Join the fight against Harper’s Crime Bill
Canadian crime is at a historic low. Why do we need mega-prisons, extreme sentences and more debt?
The Conservative government is fast-tracking the Omnibus Crime Bill, C-10— a Bill that puts ideology before evidence, turns young offenders into hardened criminals, ignores causes and sidelines rehabilitation, and puts an extreme financial burden on provinces. In Ontario alone, this crime bill will cost tax payers a billion dollars.
C-10 is based on policies that have failed in other countries, like the U.S., where they have caused skyrocketing prison populations and created expensive mega jails that effectively convert minor offenders into hardened criminals and then release them into your communities.
Other countries are moving in the opposite direction when combating crime, giving more resources to probation boards and investing greater sums in treatment programs, all with clear positive results that include falling crime rates and slowing rates of re-offending.
And yet the Conservatives continue their attack on a problem that does not exist.
What’s worse, the Conservatives won’t tell Canadians what this ideological experiment will cost.
The government’s own documents prove that prison costs are now 86% higher since the Conservatives formed government in 2006. And these costs will skyrocket with C-10. While they preach fiscal responsibility, the Conservatives are spending billions at the expense of programs specifically designed to prevent people from offending and re-offending.
Join Liberals, the legal community, and others who have spoken against this ill-conceived bill. With a united front, we can show Harper that Canadians stand against the Omnibus Crime bill.
